description

Exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with show held August 1 - November 1, 1987. The exhibition itself was centered around the idea of stations -- in the eyes of the curators, this meant "to halt, to come to rest, to suspend action and concentrate the intellect; to stand at the border between life and death ... Each [artist] responded in his or her own way to the challenges posed by this introspective theme. To our surprise, the word station was met with a feeling of unease and an acute sense of anxiety, and the works thus evoke an unsettling sense of tragedy ( Introduction, Claude Gosselin ). Included in "Fourteen Stations," the first section of the book, are works by Josef Felix Müller, Eric Fischl, Leon Golub, Georg Baselitz, Ulay and Marina Abramovic, John Heward, Arnulf Rainer, Nancy Spero, Marcel Lemyre, Bruce Nauman, Louise Bourgeois, John Baldessari, Betty Goodwin, and Duane Michals, with an introduction by Roger Bellemare. Included in "Stations," the second section of the book, are Robert Adrian X, Jocelyne Alloucherie, Daniel Buren, Michel Goulet, Jenny Holzer, Rebecca Horn, Ron Huebner, Peter Krausz, James D. Campbell, Raimund Kummer, Serge Lemoine, Sol LeWitt, Gerhard Merz, Guido Molinari, Hermann Pitz, Jean-Pierre Raynaud, Susan Schelle, Françoise Sullivan, and Ian Wallace, with a foreward by Claude Gosselin and introductory essay by Roland Schaer. A section is devoted to "The Fourteen Stations," a group of paintings by Francesco Clemente, and another to "The Fourteen Stations of the Cross, 1958 - 1966," paintings by Barnett Newman. A list of exhibited works is provided, as are biographies and bibliographies for each artist. Texts in English and French.
