"Cindy Sherman presents a new series of color photographs portraying women in suggestive psychological states. As in her earlier work, Sherman is both the subject and the photographer of each photograph. Well-known for her black and white 'Untitled Film Stills,' Sherman exhibited her first color work last year at Metro Pictures. The new photographs are a significant departure in size (larger), format (exaggerated rectangle) and emphasis (from situational constructions to psychological studies). Each of the new works depicts a different woman whose environment and period and style of dress are only vaguely identifiable, leaving the intense emotional quality of the character the greatest source of information and interpretation." -- from exhibition's press release.
