Documentation of conceptual or internationally-located projects curated by Seth Siegelaub with works by Carl Andre, Robert Barry, Daniel Buren, Jan Dibbets, Douglas Huebler, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, N.E. Thing Co. Ltd., Robert Smithson, and Lawrence Weiner. Descriptions of the works in pictures and tri-lingual texts. Also contains "Specific information (locations, dates, etc.)" in back of book that documents exacting details of projects and installations.
In 1968 Siegelaub recognized that having a physical gallery was no longer necessary for the presentation of works of art, specifically "conceptual" art could—or should—thrive best when liberated from the so-called antiseptic environment of white cube gallery space. Rather, books as disseminable objects could reach a broader, far more distributed, audiences.
"July, August, September 1969" is an example of one of these publications, documenting works by eleven artists producing outdoor works internationally.
One persistent commentary about the publication was it held a flavor of American imperial Manifest Destiny, an impression reinforced by the catalogue's covers denoting the locations of the works with dots marking the placement of the projects.
