Rago/Wrigh will offer a trove of Raymond Pettibon art and ephemera in the August 22, 2024 auction Raymond Pettibon: The Punk Years, Curated by Specific Object. Curated Specific Object / David Platzker, this presentation is an unprecedented opportunity for Pettibon lovers, art and music historians, and punk diehards alike to acquire historic fliers, artist’s books, merch, and other ephemera from the tandem emergence of Pettibon and the Southern California punk scene.

Today, associated with a cult-like following in the art world, Raymond Pettibon came of age, literally and creatively, by making artwork for the raucous, angry Southern California punk bands of the 1970s and 80s. The brother of Black Flag guitarist and SST Records founder Greg Ginn, Pettibon “produced an aggressive trove of graphic works,” as Platzker describes it, for seminal bands including Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, D.O.A., Red Kross, Subhumans, Meat Puppets, Minutemen Throbbing Gristle, and Germs. “It wasn't simply sound and fury,” writes Platzker, “but an entire aesthetic system that took hold.”

From a 1978 copy of Captive Chains—Pettibon’s first published artist book—to more polished prints, such as the 1986 promotional poster for Black Flag’s Slip It In, the 280+ lots in The Punk Years collectively span the breadth of Pettibon’s early, formational output. In addition to dozens of artist’s books and more than 50 fliers, the selection includes vinyl and cassette records, VHS, t-shirts, skateboard decks, merch lists, newsletters, and newspaper clippings. Many of the works were shown in exhibitions curated by Platzker and presented by Specific Object, specifically [St.] Raymond Pettibon[e] : 1978 - 1986 in 2008 and Raymond Pettibon: The Punk Years, 1978-1986 in 2010–2013

“When punk is history,” wrote Jeff Spurrier for the Los Angles Times, “the art of Raymond Pettibon will be considered an essential chapter.” https://www.wright20.com/auctions/2024/08/raymond-pettibon-the-punk-years-curated-by-specific-object-david-platzker is thrilled to work with David Platzker in preserving and sharing that history.
