On the morning of May 14, 2011 I encountered this artwork outside my apartment. At the time it struck me as being a humorous, ironic and ominous statement of where things were heading: on the verge of Occupy Wall Street, prior to the ramp-up of political campaigns, and at the cusp of the United States debt-ceiling debate. In this exhibition Specific Object presents the continuous playing of the original, 44 minute, 33-1/3 RPM vinyl LP record which was produced as the exhibition catalogue for the show Art by Telephone, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, November 1 - December 14, 1969.
Exhibition held at Specific Object from June 16 though October 3, 2008. Between the years 1978 and 1986 Raymond Pettibon [a.k.a. Raymond Pettibone; St. Pettibone; Chuck Higby; Ray Dylan; Raymond Ginn] produced an aggressive trove of graphic works for the seminal Southern California punk band Black Flag as well as for Red Cross, The Minutemen, Nig Heist, and others. Published predominately by SST Records -- which was founded by Pettibon's brother and Black Flag guitarist, Greg Ginn -- the exhibition features over two hundred gig flyers, artists' books, album covers, posters, T-shirts, stickers, skateboard decks, and the first five editioned prints by Pettibon.
